The Kelly SHU
A Game Changer for Drummers - The Kelly SHU Review
As a touring drummer, I've utilized the Kelly SHU in all my kits, including the shock-mounted systems seamlessly integrated into my bass drums, rack toms, floor toms, and auxiliary mounted bass drums. The installation process is straightforward, allowing you to achieve the perfect fit for your drum without hassle. I also appreciate the Microphone Cable Management System offered by Kelly Concepts, which lets you set up internal drum mics without needing to drill into the shells—an absolute win for preserving your drums.
The versatility of the Kelly SHU is impressive, with several placement options for the mounting system available at three different price points. This means that no matter your budget, you can find the perfect setup that meets your needs. Given the stellar roster of endorsing artists behind Kelly Concepts, it's clear that they’ve established themselves as a trusted brand in the drumming community.
However, I do have one small critique: while the XLR cable management system is a useful addition, I haven’t found an external XLR port location that I’m completely satisfied with. It’s a minor issue in the grand scheme, but worth mentioning.
Overall, I highly recommend the Kelly SHU for any drummer looking to elevate their sound while maintaining the integrity of their gear. You won’t be disappointed!Fat Chance Creations
**Product Review: Fat Chance Creations**
During my hunt for a reliable snare drum mic attachment, I stumbled upon some discussions on Facebook where friends were raving about Fat Chance Creations and their innovative microphone clips. Intrigued, I decided to give them a try.
I contacted the Fat Chance Creations team, and I must say, their customer service was outstanding. They took the time to explain their products thoroughly, ensuring I got the exact item I needed.
The shipping was impressively quick, and the product matched the description perfectly. The mic attachment clip securely fastens to my snare drum (and other drum rims) using a tension rod and a standard drum key. It's user-friendly, allowing for easy adjustments, which makes achieving the ideal mic placement a breeze every time.Creative Percussion Clap Stax
**Product Review: Creative Percussion Gig Clap**
I recently had the opportunity to try out the Creative Percussion Gig Clap, and I must say, it has quickly become a favorite in my percussion collection.
One of the standout features of the Gig Clap is its availability in three different sizes, which allows for greater versatility during performances. Depending on the venue or style of music, I can easily choose the size that best fits the sound I'm aiming for.
The hand-hammered steel construction is impressive and contributes significantly to the quality of the sound. The Gig Clap produces a "less-dry clap sound," which can add a layer of richness to live performances. This has been particularly beneficial for creating dynamic moments in my sets.
Another aspect I appreciate is how well the Gig Clap integrates with my existing Creative Percussion Stax. Having several Stax in my toolkit, I've found that the Clap Stax complements them perfectly, making it a must-have accessory for all my gigs.
Overall, the Creative Percussion Gig Clap is a top-notch product that delivers exceptional sound quality and versatility. I highly recommend it to any musician looking to enhance their live performances with compelling auxiliary sounds.Scorpion Percussion - Scott Stewart Series Drumsticks
After many years with my previous drumstick brand, I realized it was time for a change. I had specific requirements in mind: durability, balance, a variety of stick options, and the assurance of US distribution. During my search, I stumbled upon Scorpion Percussion and decided to give their products a shot. With an impressive lineup of over 120 options covering stick size, length, tip, and grip, I took a chance and found my perfect pair of drumsticks.
In just a month of using the Scorpion Percussion 5BX, 17" drumstick with a ball tip and their signature Venom Grip coating, I was completely sold. Since then, I've proudly showcased two series of signature drumsticks, sharing the love by gifting several pairs to younger fans in the crowd and working on adding Scorpion Percussion to my merchandise list.
I can't recommend Scorpion Percussion enough to drummers of all skill levels. As a veteran-owned company based in the United States, they use American Weapon Grade Hickory, ensuring both quality and reliability. If you’re looking for great drumsticks, look no further!RL Drums RLD4HLT Hydrologic Throne
I recently tried out the 4-leg hydraulic drum throne from RL Drums, and I have to say, Richard Leroy hit it out of the park with this one! The heavy-duty 4-leg base provides excellent stability, which is essential for drummers like me who need a solid foundation while playing.
One of the standout features is the adjustable backrest. It adds an extra layer of comfort that I didn’t realize I was missing until I started using it. For those long practice sessions and gigs, it’s a game-changer. I found myself much less fatigued after extended playing time.
Overall, I'd highly recommend the RL Drums 4-leg hydraulic throne to any drummer looking for comfort and support. It’s a fantastic investment for anyone serious about their craft.Creative Percussion Drum Taco
The CP Drum Taco is engineered to give you exceptional control over your drum’s overtones with just a flick of your stick.
Choose from three sizes—Street (3 ounces of fill), Standard (5 ounces of fill), or Grande (8 ounces of fill)—to find the perfect fit for your sound.
Using a powerful Rare Earth magnet*, rated for 26 lbs of direct pull, the CP Drum Taco securely attaches to your drum. The included “figure 8” fastener fits seamlessly between your tension rod and drum hoop, serving as a sturdy base for the magnet. Its compact design ensures it won’t hinder your drum case, and it’s compatible with both steel and non-steel hoops, thanks to the “figure 8.”
This trusty magnet provides peace of mind, keeping your Drum Taco firmly in place, unlike unreliable alternatives that risk bouncing off at the worst moments. Need to adjust your sound? Just flip the Drum Taco off the drumhead with your stick and snap it back on when needed. Want a subtle adjustment? Simply position it half on and half off the head for a tailored overtone effect.
Though primarily designed for snare drums, the Drum Taco can be used on toms; however, be aware that the media inside may rattle depending on your tuning and placement. If you're recording, keep this in mind, as your mic might pick up those sounds.
*It can attach directly to steel hoops, but the “figure 8” provides a more secure hold for optimal performance.AliExpress PDH drum stick holder
I recently made an impulse purchase of a drumstick holder from AliExpress, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised! Priced at just $9.17, I didn’t have high expectations, but I hoped it would at least keep my drumsticks secure during a couple of performances. To my delight, it not only met those expectations but exceeded them.
While my 5B drumsticks fit a bit snugly, the quality of the stick holder and its mounting system really stood out. It attached securely to my acrylic bass drum hoop, giving me confidence that my sticks would stay put when I needed them most.
As someone who frequently orders from AliExpress to discover gear from lesser-known brands, I've had my fair share of hits and misses. However, this drumstick holder is definitely a hit! If you’re in the market for an affordable way to keep your sticks handy for quick access, I highly recommend checking this product out. AliExpress offers some fantastic finds at great prices, but you sometimes have to sift through a bit of fluff to uncover the real gems like this one.Duallist D3 and D4 bass drum pedals
**Product Review: Duallist D3 and D4 Pedals**
As a drummer, I often find myself evaluating new gear, and the Duallist D3 and D4 pedals have piqued my interest. While it's still early in my experience with these pedals, I can already see their potential as valuable tools for both practice and performance.
**Pros:**
One of the standout features of these pedals is their lightweight design, making them easy to transport and set up. The belt strap is incredibly durable and glides smoothly, which is a definite plus. Whether I use them as a single pedal or the D3 as a traditional double bass pedal, the performance has been seamless. The customization options are impressive, allowing for adjustments that cater to personal playing styles. I truly feel that with continued practice, these pedals could become essential on stage, showcasing their innovative design.
**Cons:**
There are a few considerations to note. The switch between single and double pedal modes does require some pressure, which can be a bit awkward initially, but I anticipate this will become easier with time. When using the D3 pedal in a double bass setting, I've noticed some inconsistency in sound due to the arrangement of the three beaters; however, this isn't overly distracting within a sound system. The multitude of adjustment features can be somewhat overwhelming at first, presenting a learning curve as I familiarize myself with how they work. Additionally, while the pedals are shipped to the United States, their limited availability for in-person testing made the initial purchase a bit concerning.
**Overall Impression:**
I genuinely enjoy both the D3 and D4 pedals and plan to incorporate them into my practice sessions and performances. As with any new equipment, they require a bit of extra practice to master, but I believe that with time, they'll contribute positively to my playing experience.SHOW AND TOUR DATES 2024
